Primary School Bags a Freebie

Local school children were presented with free rucksacks to take with them on their school trips

Winning Back Morecambe’s West End arranged for thirty free rucksacks for pupils at Sandylands County Primary School to use on school outings.
Alan Winters, Community Development Officer, Winning Back Morecambe’s West End, said: “A teacher mentioned that the children do lots of fundraising activities to pay for the school trips, but that the children have to bring their own kit with them. I thought it would be great if we could provide them with the same baggage for all of their trips. I phoned around different companies and explained what we were trying to achieve. David Hoyle from the Uniform and Leisurewear Company thought it was a worthwhile cause and offered to produce and deliver these at no cost to the school. This is a great example of how local businesses can get involved with the community.”
Alan added: “This mean’s a lot to the children who will all have a brand new bag to put all their belongings in when they go away. We would like to thank David Hoyle for kindly donating the rucksacks.”
The thirty rucksacks have been designed using the school colours and embroidered with ‘Sandylands’.

Dog Owners - Bag it and Bin It

Free poop scoop bags are available from the Winning Back Morecambe’s West End office in a mission to reduce dog fouling on the streets.
Dog fouling is a nuisance and we would like to encourage dog owners to be responsible for their pets and clean up after them.
Please come and pick up your free bags and remember to put used bags in the bin.
Allowing your dogs to foul on the pavement could land you with a £50 fine and repeat offenders could be fined up to £1,000. The Police Community Support Officers can issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling.
Please report any dog fouling ‘hot spots’ to the Lancaster City Council Dog Wardens by telephoning 582935.
The free poop scoop bags are also available at Oggy’s Cycles on Regent Road.

West End Neighbourhood Policing Team

This is the team of police staff dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents, traders and visitors to Morecambe’s West End.
Local police have strengthened resources in the area with the full-time team now made up of three Community Beat Managers and eight Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) which will shortly be based in the area

The move has been designed to provide a more visible approach to detect and deter crime and improve environmental issues with funding for the officers provided by the police and Winning Back the West End in a unique partnership.
Neighbourhood policing sergeant Andy Williams said the extra staff would play a great part in making the West End a cleaner, safer place to live and visit.
He said: “To have a dedicated group of specialist officers working full-time in the West End is a move which shows just how important the area is to everyone.
“We now want the people of the West End to play their part and keep in touch with us and let us know if they have any problems or concerns about crime or environmental issues in the area. The officers are experts in how they can use legislation to the full to hit hard people who cause anti-social behaviour or who damage the environment through issues such as fly tipping or graffiti.’’
John Deacon, Project Director for Winning Back Morecambe’s West End, said: “One of our most exciting developments is the co-location of police officers and police community support officers within our Albert Road offices.
“This will allow us to work in close partnership with the police to make a real difference to rates of crime and anti-social behaviour as well as preventing fly tipping and littering, The addition of new PCSOs in the West End of Morecambe with powers to issue fixed penalty notices is a most welcome development.
“There are early signs that the PCSOs are having an impact on crime and anti-social behaviour in the West End and with these new powers it won’t be long before our streets are much cleaner.”
The CBMs are: PC Andy Taylor, PC Ian Nickson and PC James Neale.
The PCSOs are: Hannah Cragg, Sarah Houghton, Kirsty Stanworth, Ben Heap, Samantha Wilkinson, Mark Burgess, Daniel Arundale, Nicola Hayton.
