Dog Owners - Bag it and Bin It

Free poop scoop bags are available from the Winning Back Morecambe’s West End office in a mission to reduce dog fouling on the streets.
Dog fouling is a nuisance and we would like to encourage dog owners to be responsible for their pets and clean up after them.
Please come and pick up your free bags and remember to put used bags in the bin.
Allowing your dogs to foul on the pavement could land you with a £50 fine and repeat offenders could be fined up to £1,000. The Police Community Support Officers can issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling.
Please report any dog fouling ‘hot spots’ to the Lancaster City Council Dog Wardens by telephoning 582935.
The free poop scoop bags are also available at Oggy’s Cycles on Regent Road.

Local History

In the last issue we appealed for readers to come forward with any interesting local historical information.
Roger Obertelli brought in these photographs of his relatives who used to own a restaurant and ice cream parlour on Albert Road – where Atkinson’s Chippy is today. Dominico and wife Luigia Obertelli were Roger’s grandparents and they moved to Morecambe from Italy with their 7 children in the late 1800s. His family also owned the Savoy and the Astoria (Alhambra building) restaurants.
We would like to continue to run this feature on the history of the West End. Do you have any interesting facts or stories about our neighbourhood? You may have some old photographs of some of our landmarks that you would like to share? Perhaps you have a personal story you would like to tell us? Get in touch via the office, phone or web.

The West End is My Business

SUNSET ICES - Everyday is Like Sundae

Name: Kate Drummond

Current position and responsibilities: Sunset Ices is more than just an ice cream van.  It is a creative project, combining Kate’s love of food, people, design and all things vintage.
Sunset Ices re-creates the feeling of traditional seaside Britain; selling old-fashioned summertime treats from a beautifully restored classic Bedford CF vintage ice cream van. Evoking a simpler age of long summer days; bringing back a sense of uplifting fun and frivolity of traditional British seaside holidays to Morecambe’s West End Promenade. Kate said: “Over the past few years I have carefully restored my classic Bedford ice cream van to create a unique and compelling selling environment - with an emphasis on 1950s retro styling. The Sunset Ices ice cream van oozes old-fashioned charm - decorated with traditional sign writing and decked in bunting.“

Kate sells locally made ice cream - from Lewis’ of Morecambe as single and multiple scoop ice creams in take away tubs and cones. I also offer a range of traditional style ices (oysters, nougat wafers and sundaes etc).
Sunset Ices is located on the promenade, at the new West End Gardens site between Regent Road and the Battery.
Kate said: “By locating my business on Morecambe’s seafront near to the West End Gardens, I am looking to enhance the current regeneration of this public area, adding to the charm of this seafront location.“
“I hope that my venture will be a wonderful addition to the Morecambe’s West End Promenade, bringing something fresh and different to our town.”
The Sunset Ices van is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons (weather permitting!). Kate is also available to hire for kids parties, special events and weddings.
Please call Kate on 01524 419484 or visit her web site: http://www.everyday-is-like-sundae.co.uk for details.
