Plastic Recycling - It’s coming to the West End

As of August 6th Lancaster City Council will be collecting plastic bottles for recycling.
Every resident in the West End who is currently using the wheelie bins and recycle boxes will be given a black box with a red lid to send their plastic bottles to be recycled.  By recycling plastic bottles many residents will be able to reduce the amount of waste destined for landfill.
The average household uses more than 350 plastic bottles a year and at present less than 8 percent of these are recycled.
You will be able to recycle:
*Plastic Milk bottles
*Pop bottles
*Mineral water bottles
*Squash and juice bottles
*Shampoo, conditioner and bubble bath bottles
*Fabric softener and detergent bottles
Please remember to rinse or wash and if possible squash the plastic bottles before placing them in their box. If the box becomes full any extra plastic bottles will be collected in carrier bags placed alongside your red lidded box.
The plastic collected will used to make other plastic items such as guttering and fascias and so only plastic bottles can be collected.
If you have any queries please contact us on the Recycling Helpline: 0800 092 9705

How Clean is Our District? Have Your Say

As it’s now a year since Lancaster City Council launched its ‘Putting Litter in its Place’ campaign, the council is running a litter survey to find out how clean you think our district is

If you’d like to tell us what you think of the district, and about any particular problems or areas for improvement, you can fill in a questionnaire on the council website at http://www.lancaster.gov.uk/litter.
Surveys will also be available at reception at the following council buildings: Morecambe and Lancaster Town Halls, the tourist information centres, Palatine Hall, Cable Street and Euston Road Housing offices, Winning Back Morecambe’s West End office, Salt Ayre sports centre and White Lund Depot.
From April 1, 2006, the on-the-spot fine for littering went up to £75, and many council staff and Police Community Support Officers are able to fine people for dropping gum and cigarette butts in the street too.
During the past year the council’s Putting Litter in its Place campaign has co-ordinated a number of activities to combat the amount of litter in our district. Free stubbies - portable ashtrays have been available as well as chewing gum wrappers, a Defra-funded anti-chewing gum advertising campaign on buses and hoardings in the district won an award, a ‘gum man’ and enforcement patrols have targeted the streets of Lancaster and Morecambe removing gum and warning people about the litter fines with loud hailers.
For more information about any of these initiatives please see http://www.lancaster.gov.uk/litter.

Traditional Continental Market

Come and sample the delights of the Continent, as the Festival Market hosts its third visiting Market but it’s first ever CONTINENTAL market
On Saturday 25th August to Monday 27th August inclusive the bustling Festival Market will be enhanced further by professional continental market traders from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Holland and Poland wearing traditional costumes.  They will be selling high quality products including Britanny biscuits, olives, Swedish cider, Italian nougat, pungent cheeses, saucissons, Tartiflette from the Alps, charcuterie, fresh breads, croissants and much, much more!  Or, for those of you with a sweet tooth, there will also be freshly cooked crepes.  All of which can be washed down with wonderful Muscadet wines from a family vineyard in Frontignan.

As well as the fine edible goods, you will also be able to choose from a wide range of products including hand bags & leather items, Marseille soaps, lavender, children toys and pachmina.  There really will be something for everyone!
Most of the products on sale will come from “the terroir” (the land) of the stall holder, where they are produced by small organisations such as family businesses, farms or small factories using traditional methods, maintaining a high standard of quality.
As well as wearing their traditional local costume from 100 years ago, they will decorate their stalls to represent the area of the country they have come from. The Festival Market really will therefore provide you with a true flavour of the continent in addition to the existing 108 stalls of diverse and competitively priced goods – So for a great weekend out and “bargains by the sea” come along to the Festival Market.
