Morecambe’s Newest Festival – A Celebration of Sandcastles
Get your buckets and spades at the ready – the Sandcastle Festival is coming to Morecambe.
The City Council has recently imported thousands of tons of sand back to Morecambe’s beaches, as the final part of its sea defence scheme. The first Morecambe Bay Sandcastle Festival will take place on Sunday 19th August on the stretch of beach next to the Midland Hotel and will feature a Super Sandcastle Building Competition.
The competition will be accompanied by a packed programme of time-honoured seaside entertainments. Delightful 1920s bathing belles will be leading beach drill and synchronised bathing hut manoeuvres; Inner State theatre Company perform their ‘Seaside Sunshine’ show, of seaside music and theatrical nonsense, and local puppeteer, Martin Scott Price, presents Punch & Judy. Meanwhile, attempting to impress the timeless values of the municipal swimming baths onto the proceedings will be the ‘firm but fair lifeguards’!
There will be two categories for team entries:
Adult teams, which can comprise up to four members, aged 16 and over and Children’s teams, with up to four children, under 16, plus a responsible and supervising adult.
Each team will be allocated an 18 foot square plot and three hours to complete their artistic creation, starting at 11.00am. There will be a cash prize of £100 for the winning Adult team and gift vouchers awarded for the best Children’s entry. Winners and Runners Up will also receive commemorative certificates. The ‘most impressively attired’ team will also win a prize.
To provide inspiration, professional sand sculptor, Andrew Baynes, will be on site, creating one of his amazing sand structures.
Potential teams should contact the organisers, Lancaster City Council’s Cultural Services, to get an entry form and further details, including the competition rules. This can be done by telephoning the Bucket & Spade Hotline on 01524 582872 or 582810. A free festival programme will be available, in August, from the District’s visitor centres and attractions.
‘Football for All’ returns this summer
Hot on the heels of Morecambe Football Club’s success we are holding a summer soccer skills school for local kids.
The event which is being held at Heysham High School might even produce a future Morecambe FC player!
A similar event was held earlier in the year and was a huge success. ‘Football for all’ is for local children from West End County Primary School and Sandylands Primary School, and is free to enter with a healthy lunch, drinks and snacks all provided.
A fully qualified Football Association coach is organising a program of activities as well as devising a personal development plan and a progress report for each player.
The four-day event aims to give the players the opportunity to brush up on their football skills, enhance their personal fitness levels and to promote good behaviour.
The coach and his assistants also work to encourage positive qualities and values, such as, teamwork, communication skills, personal development coaching and attitude and awareness. Prizes will be awarded to the players who show exceptionally good behaviour.
Alan Winters, Community Development Officer for Winning Back Morecambe’s West End, said: “This is a great event for local kids and it is completely free for them to join. The coaches are fantastic with the children and have as much fun coaching as the children have learning new skills”.
The event culminates with an awards ceremony attended by family members, where the children will receive a certificate and a commemorative medal.

Here is one of the successful bids to the Community Chest fund…
SPRING FEVER
Spring Fever took place in May at the community allotments on Devonshire Road.
Baybeat Carnival band led a procession from the Healthy Living Centre to the allotment where local people gathered to welcome the spring and to celebrate the end of Phase One of the Allotment Regeneration Project at the site.
The allotment was beautifully decorated with bunting and artwork created by children from Sandylands and West End primary schools and students from Beaumont College with the help of local artists Anna Read and Rosie Tacon Glass.
Face painting, egg painting, planting, taste testing, and delicious food provided by the Healthy Living Centre were just some of the attractions on offer at this lovely event. A plant stall was organised by The West End, Heysham North Allotment Association, Musics and workshops continued throughout the afternoon with an energetic performance by a local Ceilidh band rounding off the event.
Winning Back Morecambe’s West End was pleased to award a community Chest grant of £500 to this wonderful community event.
