Yorkshire Street Improvements

Progress is being made on plans for improvements to Yorkshire Street.
Local traders and residents have already been involved in consulting on the proposed plans. Their comments will be taken onboard and used to shape the development. A consultation evening was held during October at the Clarendon with around 50 traders attending the event. They were able to view and talk through the plans with staff from Winning Back Morecambe’s West End and the construction and design consultants. Many of the people who attended the event completed a feedback form, the results of which will be taken into account when drawing up the final plans.
Tom Brown, Regeneration Officer for Winning Back Morecambe’s West End said: “From our initial findings the majority of people are in favour of the plans. We are talking to those who have some concerns to see how we can allay any fears they may have regarding car parking arrangements and access to the street. We are committed to minimising disruption during the implementation of the improvements and will work to mitigate disruption to businesses”.
The redevelopment of Yorkshire Street has been set as a high priority project within the West End Masterplan. Proposals were developed to revitalise and regenerate Yorkshire Street and in 2006 we consulted on these plans, which included its possible pedestrianisation. Following the consultation, and the strong message received from traders objecting to pedestrianisation, the plans were reworked and have now resulted in the current scheme which briefly consists of:

• Retention of one-way traffic network and short term parking, to maintain the life of the street
• High quality paving and surface treatments
• Create the feel of a quality shopping area through quality design

The plans for Yorkshire Street are not small – around £500,000 has been earmarked for the development. It will help to revitalise one of the key streets in the West End of Morecambe and lay the foundations to help attract more quality businesses and contribute to the wider regeneration of the area.
Work should start during January 2008 and there will be no parking or access for traffic to Yorkshire Street whilst construction work is taking place. Pedestrians will still be able to walk along Yorkshire Street and businesses will be open as usual. Temporary parking arrangements will be in place for shoppers who usually park on the street whilst work is underway.
More details will be published on our web site as they become available. There will be a special feature on Yorkshire Street in the next issue of the West End Bulletin, out in February.

Local Business get into the Festive Spirit

Winning Back Morecambe’s West End is providing local businesses with Christmas trees and lights.
This was really successful last year and helps to get local shoppers in a festive mood. Most of the businesses surrounding Yorkshire Street and Regent Road who agree to the scheme have also contributed to the trees and lights.
