All change on Yorkshire Street - but its business as usual

Construction works started on Yorkshire Street in January to transform this popular shopping area.

An investment of around £500,000 by Winning Back Morecambe’s West End will lead to a new street layout that will give the look and feel of a quality shopping area. A radical overhaul is underway which will see the street sympathetically redesigned. Other features of the redevelopment include;

• Retention of one-way traffic network and short-term parking to maintain the life of the street.
• High quality treatments with the design inspired by Morecambe Bay.
• Removal of kerbs to create a single surface for the pavements and carriageway similar to a town centre street.

The work will take 12 weeks to complete. During this period access to vehicles on Yorkshire Street will not be permitted at any time. Pedestrian access to the street and all the shops will be maintained through out the construction period.

Shops and businesses will be open as usual through out the construction period.

Parking
Whilst Yorkshire Street is closed to vehicular traffic, alternative parking arrangements have been made:

• Parliament Street has a number of parking bays that have a similar 1 hour stay limit to Yorkshire Street. Parliament Street runs parallel to Yorkshire Street and is also one way in the same direction with access from Regent Road.
• If the parking spaces on Parliament Street are full further parking can be found on East Street. East Street runs parallel to Parliament Street but is one way in the opposite direction heading back to Regent Road. East Street can be accessed by turning left at the bottom of Parliament Street onto West Street and taking the first turning on the left. Please note the access into East Street is quite narrow. In addition to the existing parking bays on East Street a further 18 spaces have been created to increase parking capacity in the area.
• On street parking is still available on all the other streets surrounding Yorkshire Street.

Local traders and residents have already been involved in consulting on the proposed plans. Their comments have been taken onboard and used to shape the development.

Winning Back Morecambe’s West End and Lancaster City Council are working with construction partners Volker Stevin to implement the Yorkshire Street improvements as part of the West End Masterplan.

Volker Stevin has opened an information shop at 11 West Street where up to date plans of the proposals are on display. The shop is staffed by the project’s Liaison Officer, Eric Smethurst, who is available to assist with enquiries during the shop’s opening hours which are as follows:
Tuesday: 2.00pm to 4.30pm
Thursday: 10.00am to 2.00pm
Friday: 2.00pm to 4.00pm
Eric can be contacted on 07714684744 or on the Information Shop’s telephone number on 01524 425409.

Considerate Contractors Scheme
During the construction period Lancaster City Council and Volker Stevin will work to minimise disruption and enable people to continue to shop on Yorkshire Street. Yorkshire Street will be registered as part of the Considerate Contractors Scheme. All sites registered with the Scheme are monitored by an experienced industry professional to assess their performance against the eight point Code of Considerate Practice which includes the categories Considerate, Environment, Cleanliness, Good Neighbour, Respectful, Safe, Responsible and Accountable.

Looking Back on Christmas in the West End

West End Winter Wonderland

image
The West End Gardens was transformed into a winter wonderland in time for Christmas with an open air ice rink.
Thousands of people came along during the week before Christmas and skated for free on our temporary ice rink.
A firework finale on Friday 21st December rounded off an absolutely fantastic event which we hope local residents enjoyed.

Festive Fun at West End Children’s Party

image

Winning Back Morecambe’s West End held a Christmas party for over 200 local children in December.
The party took place at the Carleton and children were treated to a magic show, presents from Santa, party games, music and dancing, a buffet and a raffle for the parents. The party was completely free for children and their family and has been organised by Winning Back Morecambe’s West End, local residents and parents and with generous support from local businesses.
Local businesses helped immensely:
The Carleton donated the venue
The Co-operative Group based at Regent Road donated £500 worth of goods
Pinocchio’s toy shop gave a 20% discount
McColls newsagent supplied 240 Cadburys selection boxes.
Alan Winters Community Development Officer for Winning Back Morecambe’s West End said: “The party was fantastic - the kids loved it. We arranged all sorts of fun activities and we even managed a special visit from Father Christmas himself.”
Alan added: “I would like to offer a huge thank you to the parents and local residents who helped to organise the party. They put in a huge amount of hard work that I’m sure the children will appreciate.”
“I’d like to offer another thank you to the local businesses who have been so generous in their support for the children’s party. It really is the season of goodwill”

View Plans of the New Housing Scheme ‘Chatsworth Gardens’

Come along to the West End Community Centre on Friday 29th February 2008, from 12noon – 6.30pm to look at how the plans are taking shape for the ‘Chatsworth Gardens’ housing project.
This event offers you the opportunity to see the latest plans and offer your comments on the proposed designs.
Chatsworth Gardens will be a mixture of brand new houses and apartments and the architects’ plans will be on view for you to have a look at and tell us what you think. There will be a range of housing styles and sizes built around two central garden squares.
The new housing will replace existing buildings bordering Regent Road, Balmoral Road, Westminster Road and Albert Road.
Places for People, one of the country’s largest property management companies will carry out the £15 million redevelopment, creating 100 new homes. The new homes will be built to high energy efficiency standards and will be available for sale and shared ownership. If you want to find out more come along to our afternoon event on Friday 29th February at the West End Community Centre on the corner of Regent Road and Westminster Road.
