Yorkshire Street East & West

This area presents a wealth of opportunities for regeneration, such as, creating a unique shopping experience of boutique style stores distinctive to the West End.

In April 2008, work to upgrade the street scene on Yorkshire Street was completed.

As a high priority Masterplan project, proposals were developed to revitalise and regenerate Yorkshire Street. In 2006 we consulted on these plans, which included its possible pedestrianisation. Following the consultation, and the strong message received from traders objecting to pedestrianisation, the plans were reworked and have now resulted in the current scheme which briefly consists of:

• Retention of one-way traffic network and short term parking, to maintain the life of the street
• High quality paving and surface treatments
• Create the feel of a quality shopping area through quality design

Redevelopment of the street started in January 2008. Around £500,000 has been earmarked for the development. We believe it will help to revitalise one of the key streets in the West End of Morecambe and lay the foundations to help attract businesses to the area and the wider regeneration of the area.

The West End Masterplan states that “In the medium term the consolidation of the retail focus should be reinforced through the development of stronger ‘anchors’ at each end of Yorkshire Street. At the northern end this could be formed through the redevelopment of the Alhambra. At the southern end this may require clearance to recognise a suitable development.”
