Changes to Refuse Collection

Lancaster City Council is currently planning and designing improvements to the way that rubbish is collected in the West End.

In the last few weeks many households in this area have been provided with wheeled bins and recycling boxes that will increase the amount of waste recycled in the area and reduce the amount of litter that is caused through ripped black sacks.

As a result of this we have had to change the collection day for properties that are still on weekly sack collection. If you have been affected by this change you should have already received a note through your letterbox to let you know.

As a reminder, if you live in homes in the streets listed below, you should now put your black bin bags out for collection every Friday.

This changeover is necessary but we do appreciate it may have caused some disruption and we are sorry about any inconvenience caused.

If you want further information about this please ring the customer service centre on 01524 582491.

We would also like to take this opportunity to let you know about some of the things that will be happening in the future to improve the overall cleanliness of the West End.

We intend to improve waste collection and recycling facilities for all householders in the West End. We are currently looking at how to deal with the 500 or so properties that have several households living in them. Proposals including the location of mini bring sites are being considered to improve recycling and reduce littering in the central West End area.

In addition to the new ways of refuse collection, the Arson Reduction Vehicle will continue to patrol the West End removing and clearing away any dumped rubbish which poses a fire risk. In certain circumstances rubbish can be removed from privately owned premises if it is seen as a major arson risk.

The coming month will also see the introduction of six Community Support Officers dedicated to the West End who will be replacing the efforts of the Street Wardens in dealing with environmental matters but the new CSO’s will also be trained to deal with police related issues such as anti-social behaviour.

Dumped rubbish and litter is recognised as a blight in the community and many organisations are working together to try and improve our neighbourhoods. Lancaster City Council have been working closely with the Police, the Community Safety Partnership and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service on the Crime and Grime Clean Sweep initiative.

The ‘Crime and Grime Clean Sweep’ initiative is supported by the City Council’s ‘Putting litter in its Place’ campaign, which aims to improve cleanliness in the district by focussing on education, enforcement and service delivery.
