Clarendon Residents give the Thumbs Up to the Remodelled Neighbouring Properties

Janet and Kevin Heaton have lived in Clarendon Road for 17 years, after moving from Huddersfield in 1989 to run a guesthouse. They have seen many changes, both good and bad, to the West End in that time, but on the whole, they have many fond memories and happy experiences.

Janet said: “We’ve had our ups and downs and there’s never been a dull moment, but the majority of the time we have been really happy here.”

Janet and Kevin ran their guesthouse for around 10 years, at a time when the majority of properties on the road were also thriving guesthouses and there was an abundance of tourists and regulars who used to come for their holidays. After a decade they decided to close the guesthouse because the number of visitors diminished and those who came mistreated the rooms. However, they loved the property and wanted to stay in the West End, so they found a new way of filling the 6 bedrooms – with foster children. Janet and Kevin have looked after many foster children and eventually decided that they wanted to adopt. Over the past few years they have become ‘mum and dad’ to Kieran.

They are both extremely house proud and have a spotless family home filled with lots of happy memories of past times running the guesthouse and also from fostering children.

Janet said: “The house is getting too big for us now and it’s a struggle to look after the place, so we will move in the next few years to something smaller, but we will definitely stay in the area. Also, there is plenty for Kieran to do, with playing on the new sandy beach or riding on his bike in the street. The promenade is lovely and flat and great for walking, why would we want to go anywhere else?”

Janet and Kevin speak positively about the regeneration of the West End and they are happy that the former ‘Greenhurst’ and ‘Castlemaine’ guesthouses are being converted into family homes. Kevin said: “When they [Greenhurst and Castlemaine] were bedsits, the police used to attend three or four times a day. We knew that the area couldn’t go any lower and we have stayed.” On the newly renovated former Greenhurst hotel which has been converted into two family homes, Janet said: “They are very nice, and have been well done. I approve of the shared ownership scheme because the person living in the property is more likely to care for the house if they own it.”

Their hope for Clarendon Road is that residential parking is introduced. Keith said: “Parking is an issue. Sometimes we cannot park outside our own house, especially if there is an event on in Morecambe. We would like to make this street residential parking.” They are also appealing for a window cleaner, - with four storeys and bay windows, - keeping the glass clean is a difficult job, and now that there are nice properties to look at, sparkling windows will make the view even better.

Buddy, why not take the ‘but’ out of cycling!

Ever thought about cycling to work but lack confidence? Confused about equipment? Need a little support in getting started? Unsure of the best route to take?

If so, then the Bike Buddy Scheme could be right up your street!

Funded by the Lancaster and Morecambe Demonstration Town, the new Bike Buddy Scheme is a free service for local residents to help new and returning cyclists to get to grips with cycling by helping them to find a suitable route to where ever they want to go.

Bike Buddies are all experienced cyclists with a local good knowledge and are able to map out the most suitable route for any required journey, whether it be to work, the supermarket, health centre or community hall.

By completing a simple questionnaire containing a few basic questions about your cycling abilities, you will be matched with a buddy who will contact you by phone or by email to discuss your requirements and arrange a convenient time and date to meet up for a ‘dummy run’ of the journey.

Buddies will also be on hand to give information on the local cycle network, to give tips on riding safely in traffic, varying environments and weather conditions and offer advice on equipment, accessories and basic bike maintenance.

With Lancaster and Morecambe one of just six Cycle Demonstration Towns across the country, it's hoped the Bike Buddy Scheme will remove any barriers faced by cyclists and encourage more people to get on their bikes and show the rest of the country the cycling way!

If you are interested in joining the scheme you can pick up a questionnaire and more information from the Winning Back Morecambe's West End office on Albert Road.

It’s easy, and in just a few single steps you could be pedalling away!

Are you interested in the effect of crime? Do you want to make a difference? Or have you been the victim of crime and want someone to talk to?

People who have suffered a crime may need practical information and advice or simply someone to talk to.

At Victim Support there are trained volunteers who visit people in their own homes following a crime. They give free confidential support and information including crime prevention advice, information on compensation, advice on other sources of help and liase with other organisations on behalf of victims.

They are looking for volunteers in the West End who can spare a couple of hours a week to work with victims in all areas of crime but particularly those who would like to work with children and young people and supporting victims of domestic abuse. (Full training is given). They would also welcome volunteers who would like to with outreach work, or fundraising. The opportunities are endless and whatever your skills are there may be something you can get involved in.

If you would like to become a volunteer with Victim Support, the next training course starts in November. You can apply for an information pack at 1 Chapel Street Preston PR1 8BU, telephone 01772 828422 or email lcarr@victimsupportlancashire.org.uk.

If you have been a victim of crime and would like to talk to someone telephone 0845 373 2458, to arrange for a local volunteer to visit you or for an appointment at St Barnabas Community Hall at Regent Road.

A 33 year old male assault victim who contacted Victim Support said: “Just having someone to talk to who was not another ‘official’ really made a difference to me, I realised that my emotions were normal and I was not going mad.“
