Winning Back Morecambe’s West End has secured funding to redevelop the
Promenade Gardens.
Work is due to start on site (the part of the promenade between the Battery and Regent
Road) next month and will continue through to Spring 2007.
The results from the fun day and consultation event held at the gardens on the 25th
July showed that the majority of people preferred the design with a new toilet facility
at the Battery end of the gardens.
There was concern expressed over the loss of the water feature and the designs have
now been developed to take into account the results and comments from local residents who
took part in the consultation event. A water feature has now been included within the
performance area. This is expected to consist of jets of water shooting upwards with
ambient lighting to enhance the feature.

Further feasibility and design work needs to be undertaken for the new
toilet facility and planning permission will also be required. Therefore, the new toilet
facilities will not be delivered within this phase of the redevelopment.
A large proportion of the Promenade Garden will continue to be ‘green’ areas,
consisting of grass, perennials and annual plants.
There will be a gentle slope leading up to the viewing area which will not be any
higher than the current wave reflection wall. There will also be a small leaning rail
facing the bay.
A road crossing point opposite the main entrance to the gardens is also planned.
However, this may not be delivered until later in the year, as this needs to go though a
separate planning process.
The land is held under conveyance for the purpose of public pleasure grounds and
public walks. Confirmation has been received that all the planned alterations are
permissible by s76 Public Health Acts Amendment Act 1907.
