REGENT PARK UPDATE

The ‘Information Day’ on 7th February generated lots of interest surrounding the potential restructure of Regent Park.

Over 400 responses have been received so far. Feedback from the questionnaires has showed that Option 1 is the most favoured of the three on view, as it provides activities for all age groups.

Of the individual activities, there is strong support for the continued use of the bowling greens but also some strong objections, particularly from those who whish to see more activities for teenagers and young children.

Also the idea to relocate the toddler’s play area into a more central location is well supported, and to provide a family picnic area so Mums and Dads can keep an eye on the toddlers while they play.

Access to public toilets comes high on people’s priority list (currently the only access is through the Café), and Option 1 also seeks to extend the current clubhouse to enable better toilet provision.

The need for ongoing repair budgets and a strong "policing" presence is important in order to limit vandalism and maintain a high quality environment.

Potential Funding

It is likely that grants to fund Option 1 will be accessed in a structured approach over a number of years. To that end, the ‘Friends of Regent Park’ have recommended that the Children’s Play Area be the top priority, with the revamping of bowling green No 2 being the second priority, with the family picnic area being the third priority.

Acting Chairman Brian Cooke said, ‘I’m please that we have reached the stage where fundraising can begin. Obviously as a bowler, I want to see the greens upgraded, but I recognise that Regent Park is a public asset and belongs to people of all ages.’
