Progress on improving the coastal protection works is moving on apace and should be completed by next summer.
As a result of this important scheme, 1300 properties will be protected from the type of flooding that has caused so much damage in the storms that hit Morecambe in 1977, 1983 and 1990.
Birse Civilis Ltd, on behalf of Lancaster City Council, are implementing the scheme which includes applying a ‘rock armour’ protection to the existing sea wall at Sandylands, introducing two rock breakwaters (one of the breakwaters will include a platform for anglers) and making improvement along the whole length of the promenade.
There will inevitably be some disruption during this process and site traffic will need to gain access which will involve keeping pedestrians within a fenced off footway for safety |
measures. The access steps to the beach will also be closed however, there will still be beach access from the ramp at the Battery Breakwater and also via the steps at Whinnysty Lane. The existing steps will still be available in case of emergency.
During the coastal defence works, part of the Battery Breakway Car Park will be used as a site compound and for site offices. There is a liaison office opening on the car park to provide more information about the scheme, call in for more details. Unfortunately this will reduce the number of parking spaces available to the public and the contractors would like to express their apologies for the inconvenience caused, and they will try to minimise any disruption. In the meantime, if you would like to find out more about the coastal defence works, please call Ged Wright on 582955.
