NEWS ROUNDUP CONTINUED

...a restaurant, retirement flats and retaining the Polo Tower. At the rear of the site, close to Morrissons supermarket, the committee have also granted planning permission for a leisure club and gym, a JJB sports store, a DIY store and garden centre for Homebase, and an additional store for large household goods. The next stage in the process is for Government Office North West to approve the plans, before the scheme receives full approval.

If Government Office North West approves permission, the developers have offered a further £200,000 to make extra improvements to the surrounding areas to build cycle routes and pedestrian walkways.

In other areas of the West End, further developments are underway. In Grove Street, a planning application has been approved for 8 homes on the site of a disused warehouse.

Progress is being made on Clarendon Road and West End Road. Already twenty-two properties have been purchased by the City Council and Adactus Housing Group.

Local residents will be pleased to learn that the Castlemaine and Greenhurst Hotels will soon have the builders in. They will be converted into family homes over the coming months and sold for shared ownership. We have had positive feedback from local

residents who have commented on how much quieter Clarendon Road has been since the Castlemaine and Greenhurst properties have been emptied.

West End Road will soon see superb modern ‘open-plan’ style flats, which, when completed, will be available to buy on the open market and and on the ‘shared ownership’ scheme. The planning applications for the modern open-plan flats are being drawn up at the moment and if they are given permission, builders could be on site before next summer.

The West End Masterplan has marked out Albert Road and Regent Road for a ‘flagship housing exemplar project’, meaning the houses are built around a shared garden square and there will be private parking for the surrounding properties. The remodelled and refurbished properties around the new garden square will be designed and finished to a very high standard which will have a major, positive, impact on the image of the West End. At the moment Lancaster City Council and English Partnerships are working on an agreement for funding which will hopefully be in place by January.

The Winning Back Morecambe’s West End team are agreeing to buy properties in this area now where owners are wanting to sell.

Proposals for the Central Park area and Clarendon Road are still open to local consultation, so make sure you come along to open days and meetings to have your say! Funding for this area has been budgeted for 2007/2008 from the North West Development Agency, and the Winning Back the West End team will be working on the scheme this time next year.
