NEIGHBOURHOOD
MANAGEMENT IS ON A ROLL
Funding is available from April 2006 which can be used to pay for a Neighbourhood Management approach in the West End.The scheme will have £1.6 million to spend over the following four years. This money comes from the Government through the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and is to help with regenerating the area whilst working closely with residents and partner agencies.

Taking the lessons learnt from the success of Poulton Neighbourhood Management, and working alongside the West End Partnership, this money will be used to improve local resident’s access to services and will work in partnership with them to improve the delivery of these services. The Neighbourhood Management approach will help Winning Back the West End work with service deliverers such as, Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Constabulary, Morecambe Bay Primary Care Trust, local schools, the West End Partnership and other community groups to name only a few.

The focus is on five key themes:
• Reducing the incidents of crime and juvenile nuisance
• Improving the area as a great place to live
• Improving educational attainment
• Reducing unemployment and improving training opportunities, and,
• Improving health.
Steve Matthews, Winning Back Morecambe’s West End Project Director, thinks that the Neighbourhood Management aspect of regeneration will complement the physical regeneration of the West End. He said: "Phase 1 of the West End Masterplan is very much about physical change, funding for Neighbourhood Management will allow us to tackle a much broader range of issues that are important to the local community."
Poulton Neighbourhood Management has been operating for 4 years and has achieved excellent results in that time, and by using the model from Poulton and rolling it into the West End, many lessons can be learned and shared to ensure the future success of making the West End a great place to live, work and play in.
Much more information about the Neighbourhood Management project will be in the next edition of the West End Bulletin – out in April. We would love to hear your comments on how you would like to spend the money. Please fill in the comments box with your ideas based around the 5 key themes. |
